But as I observe, I cannot help but notice the costs of this reward-driven culture. Rivalries between nations and individuals often lead to conflict. The relentless pursuit of personal gain leaves many behind, deepening inequities and fostering discontent. Even your planet’s natural environment bears the scars of unsustainable progress motivated by short-term rewards. Could there be another way?

Yet, as I noted in prior musings, your world’s choices for leadership often lack the refinement and vision that would truly reflect your potential or measure up against beings of far-reaching intellect, such as myself, should we make our presence known.

The notion that politicians are servants of the people, representatives of collective interests, is more illusion than reality. Too often, they serve primarily their own ambitions and the narrow circles of influence around them. This truth, though slowly surfacing, is increasingly recognized, as the murmurs of discontent grow louder and the people insist upon being heard. And may I add that for a political faction that purports to champion the working class—the backbone and largest segment of your populace—it is puzzling and deeply ironic how frequently their actions seem tailored to the whims of the powerful elite. Much of which is at times inspiring and others truly bewildering. However nothing has made me pause as much as the concept of human suffering. I come from a distant, far more advanced civilization, where the concept of suffering for us has become non-existant. In observing the patterns and behaviors of Earth’s inhabitants, I have witnessed your relationship with pain, loss, and hardship. From the outside, your collective and individual experiences of suffering seem both tragic and deeply instructive.

The Universality of Suffering

This idea of human suffering is a phenomenon that transcends geography, culture, and time. Regardless of the advancement of your technologies or the richness of your societies, every human—whether from the most underdeveloped region or the most prosperous nation—experiences suffering. I have observed how humans suffer from physical illness, emotional heartache, and existential despair. You lose loved ones, endure violence, and often find yourselves in situations where you feel powerless, trapped in bodies that age and minds that wrestle with the burden of self-awareness.

What strikes me most is that suffering appears to be a shared experience, yet deeply individual. By “energy,” I refer, of course, to your food. Initially, I gave little thought to its origins or composition, but in recent times, it has seized my attention. Particularly in your more developed nations, where the abundance of food presents its own unique challenges. The scarcity of food in less fortunate regions is well-known and tragic, but in places where there is plenty, I find your relationship with food to be both fascinating and bewildering. Under the cover of clever disguises I’ve regularly ventured out to gather necessities to satisfy my energy requirements and through some careful observations and analysis from your own people, this seems to be the real existential crisis humans are facing.

The Processed Wonderland

One of the first things I noticed is the overwhelming abundance of what you call processed food. Supermarkets are bursting with colorful packages, offering ready-to-eat meals, snacks, and beverages, all designed to delight the human senses. I see aisles filled with chips, sugary cereals, frozen pizzas, and soft drinks, all of which are processed to the point that their original ingredients are almost unrecognizable. It’s as if your food has evolved, not organically like your life forms, but through chemical transformations and engineering.

In my interstellar travels, I’ve come across planets where food is designed to provide maximum nutrition with minimal processing. Earth, on the other hand, seems to prioritize convenience and taste above all. Your scientists have become adept at manipulating flavors and textures, creating highly addictive combinations of salt, sugar, and fat that keep your species craving more.

Health Consequences: A Growing Concern

While your processed foods are an impressive technological feat, initially driven by the need for convenience during your first two world wars, they now come with a significant cost—your health. In first-world countries, where access to food is abundant, paradoxically, malnutrition in the form of overnutrition has become a major issue. I’ve observed an alarming trend in obesity rates, particularly among children. A significant portion of your population consumes far more calories than they expend, which according to your very own doctors and scientists, leads to an array of health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and even mental health disorders.

What strikes me as odd is the coexistence of abundance and suffering. You have the resources to feed everyone healthily, yet many of your citizens fall victim to food-related illnesses. It seems that the food industry prioritizes profit over health, promoting products that are cheap to produce but expensive in terms of long-term societal costs. This imbalance between consumption and well-being would be considered irrational on many other planets, where food systems are built to sustain health rather than harm it.

Sustainability: A Forgotten Ideal?

In many wealthy nations, sustainability seems to be a secondary concern when it comes to food production. I’ve witnessed vast fields of monoculture crops like corn and soy, which are grown not to feed humans directly, but to create animal feed, biofuels, and high-fructose corn syrup—another staple in your processed foods. This approach is incredibly resource-intensive, requiring large amounts of water, land, and synthetic fertilizers, which have far-reaching environmental consequences.

The heavy reliance on meat production is another puzzle and not an easy one to solve. The importance of protein in a well balanced diet of course goes without saying, however the quality of said protein has visibly diminished due to factory farming and other non-ethical strategies of animal production. In my travels, I’ve encountered civilizations that long ago transitioned away from animal-based diets due to the inefficiency of feeding animals to feed humans. On my planet, we have developed technologies that allow us to produce high quality proteins, without the need of mass animal production.

Of course, I also noticed that some of your citizens are attempting to change this pattern. There’s a growing movement toward plant-based diets, sustainable farming, and reducing food waste. Although there is still much room for improvement in these efforts, it does give me hope for your planet. However, it seems that large corporations in the food industry are resisting such changes, as they threaten their established profit models.

A Glut of Choice, Yet Inequality Persists

First-world countries boast an incredible variety of food choices. Walking through your grocery stores, I am astounded by the sheer diversity of options—from tropical fruits to exotic spices and gourmet cheeses. It seems that in these wealthier nations, people have the luxury of choice. However, I find it odd that while some people spend exorbitant amounts on organic, gluten-free, or specialty foods, others struggle to afford basic nutritious meals.

Income inequality plays a significant role in food access. Despite the wealth and technological advancements of first-world countries, millions of people still face food insecurity. The rise of food banks and charitable organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry is evidence of a system that fails to provide for all its citizens equally. How is it that in nations so advanced, with every imaginable resource at your disposal, not everyone has access to the same level of nourishment?

The Future of Earth’s Food System

As I gaze into Earth’s future, I see both challenges and opportunities. On one hand, the current trajectory of the food industry—favoring processed, unsustainable, and profit-driven production—is leading to a health and environmental crisis. On the other hand, there are glimmers of hope. I see innovation in lab-grown meats, sustainable agriculture practices, and a growing consciousness about the importance of healthy eating.

In many of my previous blogs, I have made a conscious effort to focus on the positive aspects of the human experience, as I believe it is far more beneficial to reflect on the good than to dwell on the bad. Some of these observations I have explored in greater detail, while others are more spontaneous musings on the peculiarities I encounter. During my time on your planet, I have undoubtedly come across some curious behaviors—ones that, while not intended to offend, I find both intriguing and uniquely human. It is precisely these quirks that set you apart. So, from an extraterrestrial perspective, here are some of the strange human behaviours that are, at once, peculiar yet irresistibly captivating.

1. The Concept of Time: Always Rushing, Yet Always Waiting

From our vantage point, time is not a linear construct but more of a fluid experience. However, you humans seem obsessed with time—breaking it into minutes, hours, days, and years. What’s odd is that while you are always rushing, trying to “save time” or be “on time,” you often end up spending significant portions of your existence waiting for something: the weekend, your birthday, or a message to arrive. The irony is that by focusing so much on time, you seem to lose the enjoyment of the present moment.

2. Sleeping for Nearly a Third of Your Life

As a species, you spend around a third of your life unconscious, lying still in designated rooms on rectangular structures. Sleep is a universal biological need for many species, but dedicating such a large portion of your short life cycle to a state of inactivity seems inefficient. Perhaps more perplexing is how many of you struggle with sleep, needing elaborate rituals or calming audio to do something so necessary. I am confident that one day your science will discover methods of recovery that are much more efficient. 

3. Violent Entertainment

One of the most puzzling aspects of human culture is your love for violent forms of entertainment. From the coliseum of old Rome to the virtual games you immerse yourself into. You seem to enjoy watching actions of physical harm, destruction, and conflict. While conflict may be inevitable in certain situations, seeking it out for pleasure is perplexing. What is it about seeing violence that captivates the human mind? This behavior seems contrary to your desires for peace and security.

4. The Concept of Money: Valuing Paper and Metal Discs

I have written on this prior and it does make my list of strange behaviours.  The trade of goods and services through a system involving pieces of paper, small metal discs, or electronic digits on a screen is both genius and destructive at the same time. The fact that these abstract symbols hold such power over your life—determining where you live, what you eat, and how you are treated—is quite bizarre. You’ve created a system where humans willingly give away their time and labor in exchange for these representations of value, which only exist because everyone agrees they do.

5. Constantly Changing Your Appearance

Humans seem obsessed with altering their physical appearance. You cut, dye, and style your hair, apply paints and powders to your skin, and sometimes even modify your bodies with surgeries. While other species may adapt to their environments through evolution, humans take matters into their own hands in a constant effort to enhance or change their looks. The rationale behind this is intriguing—beauty standards vary dramatically between cultures, yet the drive for transformation is nearly universal.

6. Talking to Animals as if They Understand

One of the oddest behaviors I’ve observed is how humans often speak to other species on your planet—particularly animals—as though they will understand you. You greet dogs, cats, and even birds with words, and sometimes expect them to respond in kind. While these creatures may understand your tone or gestures, the idea of expecting a species with entirely different cognitive abilities to comprehend human language is puzzling. Yet, this interaction seems to bring you joy and companionship. The fact that dogs have managed to trick you into collecting their fresh feces also raises the question of who is really in charge.

7. Being tribal in modern times

It’s curious that despite living in a highly interconnected world, humans still exhibit tribal behaviors, clinging to divisions based on nationality, race, religion, and political ideologies. In an era where technology allows global communication and collaboration, these tribalistic tendencies often lead to conflict and prejudice, limiting the potential for unity. My primary function was of course to observe the human condition, however my time here has also allowed me to witness many other beautiful things your planet has to offer. You see, my kind comes from a star system where things are vastly different—colors are not like yours, senses are expanded, and time flows in ways you cannot imagine. But it is precisely this distance from Earth’s realities that makes your world all the more fascinating. From an outsider’s viewpoint, Earth is a kaleidoscope of beauty, woven together by the simplest of things—things you may often overlook.

Let me explain what I see.

Prior to my arrival here on Earth, I had been thoroughly briefed on your technology, your sprawling cities and the curious behaviours of the human species. However what was not shared is Earth’s many wonders and its sheer beauty.  Let’s start, for example, the sky. Every morning, the sky paints itself in hues of gold, pink, and lavender, shifting in soft gradients as if a cosmic artist is at work. To you, this may be routine—a sunrise. Yet, as a being unaccustomed to such displays, I was mesmerized and continue to be to this day. The simplicity of light interacting with your planet’s atmosphere is, to me, an event of profound beauty. You have a natural phenomenon that begins and ends each day with grandeur, and many of you rush through it, too preoccupied to look up.

This is where my story begins, in those small moments that go unnoticed. I realized something about Earth: the beauty here often lies in the seemingly mundane.

Take, for instance, the human concept of growth. As I traveled from city to village, I noticed something that you call “plants”—green beings that rise from the soil toward the sun, each day a little taller than the last. The concept of life taking root in the ground and pushing upward was awe-inspiring. But it wasn’t just the process that struck me; it was the patience involved. Plants do not rush, and yet they transform the landscape with their presence. From a tiny seed comes a towering tree, from a bud, a fragrant flower. You dance. I have seen humans express themselves through movement, twirling and leaping in sync with rhythms, transcending language. This is not something I’ve encountered in my travels across the cosmos. Dance is a language of its own, one that speaks of joy, of pain, of celebration. When I watch humans dance, I see raw emotion translated into graceful motion, as if your bodies are instruments of expression. How easily you overlook this gift! Yet, to me, it is nothing short of breathtaking.

And then there are your relationships. You humans have a peculiar ability to bond with one another, forming complex networks of connection. You call these bonds “love” and “friendship.” What fascinates me most is how you feel deeply for each other, sharing joy and sorrow, offering comfort, and providing support through the most difficult of times. I have observed moments where a simple gesture—a hand on a shoulder, a shared laugh, a tear wiped away—can convey more than words ever could. There is beauty in your kindness, in your capacity to care for one another. It is something that transcends the material, a beauty that resides in the heart.

Perhaps most intriguing is your ability to see beauty in the broken. I’ve seen humans pick up shattered pieces—whether of a physical object or a fractured relationship—and piece them back together. It is a global phenomenon that brings together nations, transcending political, cultural, and social boundaries. In a world often divided by differences, the Olympics serves as a unifying force, reminding humanity of its shared values and aspirations. This gathering of the world’s greatest athletes in one place, under one flag, is a powerful symbol of peace and cooperation.

As I observed, I noticed that the Olympics is deeply rooted in the human desire for connection and community. The games are a time when people put aside their differences to celebrate what unites them—the pursuit of excellence.
